Electronic duo Behind The Moon have unveiled their hypnotic new single Pendulum, exploring the complexities of modern relationships through trip hop soundscapes. Released September 1, it marks the act’s fifth record in as many years.
Following the release of Living on the Borderline in 2022, the pair continue to prove that they’re not afraid to tackle tough subject matters such as mental illness, abuse, love and loss, with Pendulum acting as a commentary on the coined phrase ‘situation-ships’. “You don’t know where you stand, are they interested in you romantically or aren’t they, is anything ever going to come of this?” vocalist Hannah Sophie explained: “These are all of the questions that you very rarely get an answer to when you’re talking to someone online.”
Pendulum purrs into action, quite literally. The opening sounds really are Hannah’s cat, recorded on a voice note late at night while developing the lyrics and melody. Scott Evans’ electronic instrumentation emerges with dark but addictive beat that compliment Hannah’s rich vocals. Deep and powerful, they strike the fine balance between vulnerability and strength.
The duo has mastered the art of creating an ambiance that fully immerses the listener, and Pendulum is no exception And much like how a pendulum swings from side to side, Behind The Moon curate a similar effect as it moves through the speakers, mirroring the duality of emotions experienced in ambiguous relationships. The ebb and flow between moments of angst and calm eloquently portray the frustrations felt at mixed signals and uncertain futures.
The production, undertaken by Scott – a man of many talents, having also recently launched his own record label alongside managing events for Hanley’s Captain’s Bar – is spot on, because despite his addiction for additional projects (Yoodoo Voodoo, too, don’t forget), his attention to detail is meticulous.
Atmospheric with haunting vocals and emotionally-charged lyrics, Pendulum sets Behind The Moon apart from the masses in the contemporary music landscape, offering a dark but ever-relevant listen that will leave you transfixed by their charm.
