Same old shit, different day. It’s something that so many of us can relate to as we find ourselves trapped in the monotony of everyday life. And in his latest single, Same Old, Council Cut documents his personal experiences of growing up on ST postcodes with limited time and money and the feeling of constraint it comes with.
The solo music project was born in 2022 following ‘a decade of failed bands and wasted opportunities’, and since its inception, Will has produced a number of singles relating to his working-class roots, including Home Grown, Back Up North and Sound.
It’s a theme that bleeds into Same Old, a track that effortlessly blends Will’s love of indie guitar bands like Oasis, with the likes of garage and rap akin to Jamie T or Mike Skinner, with down-to-earth lyrics delivered atop a solid foundation of catchy electronic beats. Hiphop Britpop, he coins it – and it sums it up brilliantly.
The gritty and weathered vocals complement the honest and authentic nature of the lyrics, alongside Council Cut’s unapologetic approach to storytelling, which serve as an expressive social commentary on the struggles faced by many in their day-to-day lives. It offers an invitation for listeners to reflect on their own aspirations, and becomes ‘a tale of hope when dreams turn into nightmares’, as Will puts it.
Throughout the chorus and bridge, Will uses synthesised vocals with overlapping harmonies and backing for a fuller sound, with seamless transitions between rap verses and melodic hooks, demonstrating the melting pot of diverse influence that has helped shape the unique sound of Council Cut.
Recorded at UTC Studios, in Longton, Same Old comes with its own music video in keeping with the Council Cut brand. The visuals, recorded at Riff Factory, are as DIY as direct as his musical approach.The addition of these clips not only provides an engaging platform of which to listen to the release, but also affords listeners the opportunity to connect deeper with it as they watch it being performed.
