Review by The Underground venue manager Lee Barber
Finney ended 2023 as one of the buzz bands in the area, filling out The Underground for a steller headline, having scooped support acts in the form of Darla Jade and Foxa Riot. The energetic four piece also garnered a huge crowd for their performance at Lymelgiht Festival last May, and judging by the first 93 days of January 2024, Finney has no intentions of letting slip the fantastic momentum they have worked so hard to build.
Already this year the band have played alongside And What! at The Rigger, and also appeared on the Honey Box, where they confirmed themselves as natural performers, whilst hinting at promoting their music via Tindr. And now they have dropped their first release of the year with Lady, the sultry, funk-led head bopper which found its birth in the dark depths of the pandemic.
Frontman Adam Finney wrote and recorded the song himself at home as a solo artist, and though the song remained a firm fan-favourite when the band formed, they struggled to make it work with their ever evolving set. With this in mind, the track was rerecorded in its entirety, with this fresh new version being recorded and produced by Finney keytarist Mitch, who was particularly pleased to confirm Darla Jade’s vocals from the original version do indeed feature on the new release.
Lady sees the band make further steps forward in their progression, the loyal following growing by the day being only confirmed by releases such as this, which is now accompanied by the short film. Produced by Stuck Up Films and directed by Tom Millington, the music video holds the concept of Adam being trapped in the mundanity of his 9-5, and to escape such boredom begins conjuring up the outrageous scenarios which play out through the song, whilst in reality, our dear frontman is stuck in a queue for a broken water machine.
Lady was the single the fans had long been waiting for, and Finney certainly brought their A game to the table with this one, showing early in 2024 that they mean business. Complete with personalised outfits for their performances thanks to super local music fan and artist @grifzart, Finney are racing through the year with their look and sound on point.
