FINNEY ignites excitement for debut ‘project’ with new single World Burn

A sample of a vintage broadcast about how sexual liberation threatened to destroy the youth and the future emits through the speakers as FINNEY fires up their latest single, World Burn. It’s their third release of 2023 so far, following Walking in the Rain and Technicolour Daydream, marking yet another step closer to the bands ‘debut project’, due for release in the coming weeks.

Their string of records and electric live performances this year has built much anticipation around their highly confidential announcement, and with World Burn, they’ve just cranked up the excitement even further as their ever-growing and loyal fanbase eagerly await what is to come.

Speaking on the single, vocalist and frontman Adam Finney said: “The song represents always wanting to grow up as quickly as you could when you were a teenager. You then grow up and realise how easy it used to be, when you were oblivious, with no ties holding you down and also, realising that there are awful things happening around the world that you couldn’t possibly comprehend would ever be seen outside of movies. Looking back at the days when all you had to do for that day was worry about what time tea was.”

The indie-pop gem maintains that 80s charm that FINNEY have meticulously crafted, with a rock edge akin to Back to the Future-influenced McFly. Jovial guitars and upbeat instrumentation capture the creative energy that this four-piece outfit are powered by, while Adam’s lyrics paint a universally recognisable picture of the tumultuous transition from carefree youth to the harsh realities of adulthood.

“This song feels like a message to everyone in a similar position to us,” says Mitch Mindom, keys master and producer of FINNEY. “Young, alone and terrified of the world that we’re experiencing. Wanting to see the world through the eyes of our younger selves back when we didn’t know what the world really was all about.”

FINNEY are, without doubt, one of the most hardworking, imaginative and driven bands on the Staffordshire scene at the moment, prevalent in their attention to detail and out-of-the-box innovation when it comes to production.

Mitch Rindom’s approach of ‘throwing stuff at the track and seeing if it’d stick’ is unconventional yet highly successful. From the crackling and pouring of cans after the verse to the massive stacks of chanting and screaming in the chorus, World Burn wonderfully reflects the chaos of coming of age. The chanting and stomping create an infectious energy that mirrors the spirit of rebellion that FINNEY embodies.

Towards the end of the song, Izzi Glover – friend and photographer of the band – screams ‘OH MY GOD IT’S FINNEY’, which is the kind of thing that could have easily come across incredibly cheesy, but this playful outburst lends itself brilliantly to the song, FINNEY proving once again that they’re unafraid to push boundaries, have fun with it, and not take themselves too seriously.

World Burn brings with it the band’s first ever music video – outrageous but quintessentially FINNEY, the short movie was filmed with Stuck Up Films, which offers a flavour of the act’s personality and chemistry together.

World Burn is a masterful indie pop track that skillfully combines introspective lyrics with a dynamic and experimental production solidifies FINNEY as a band to watch in the indie music scene. With its technicolour melodies and the band’s electric magnetism, their debut project holds much promise, and I, among many others, eagerly await its arrival.
