Introducing themselves with a sun-drenched soundtrack to insomnia, ChicBones are the latest musical outfit to emerge on the scene this year. The duo – comprising Jake McNeil and Darcy Valentine – have unveiled their debut single No More, and it’s an enticing glimpse into their psychedelic infused sound.
No More unfolds like a hypnotic reverie with deep raspy basslines, shimmering tambourines and a 60s flair reminiscent of The Doors or Fleetwood Mac paired with The Stone Roses, seamlessly blending elements of classic psychedelic rock with modern indie sensibilities.
Prior to the completion of the single ChicBones had seen the Allah-Lahs at Manchester Psych Fest, whose sound was still ringing true in their ears whilst writing their debut record – this, and their current residence in Pamplona, Spain, provide a distinct summery feel to the track.
McNeil’s baritone vocals weave through the dreamlike instrumental arrangement in an irony worthy of an Alanis Morrisette lyric. Mesmerising soundscapes and its ethereal production allows listeners to lose themselves in the hazy melodies, with Darcy’s enchanting backing vocals providing a beautiful balance to the overall sound. And despite the fuzziness of it all, there’s an undeniable clarity to No More – a lucidity like that feeling of being able to control your own dreams.
And following its release on February 23, newly acquired fans will be thrilled to know that we won’t have too long to wait for more. ChicBones are currently focusing on their next single release with an ‘armful of genre-spanning songs’ up their sleeves which will be revealed in the coming months. Anticipate variations to their sound and influence, showcasing the natural malleability of how they write.
