“Irresistibly infectious” – Home is Ruby J’s most mature release to date

Inspired by Tash Sultana and Arctic Monkeys to pick up a guitar at age 13, Ruby J has spent the last five years busking the streets of Staffordshire and building a name for herself, even competing on The Voice Kids and performing at major festivals like The Isle of Wight Festival and Neighbourhood.

Now 18, the songstress has released her brand new single Home – and it’s her most mature record to date, marking her coming of age with an indie-soul single that will surely see her on the fast-track to success.

Drawing inspiration from Motown’s lively rhythms and soulful vocals, Home is a testament to Ruby J’s eclectic influences and the musical diet she’s been brought up on. The single bursts through the speakers with an infectious energy, a foot-stomping beat and bright grooving riffs before making way for her undeniably recognisable vocals to take centre stage. Ruby J’s vocal style has drawn comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Paloma Faith in the past, with Paloma herself coaching her on The Voice Kids in 2020, describing the talented young artist as ‘that unique voice’. Her tone certainly has an ‘old soul’ quality about it, confident and rich, and perfect for bringing a vintage quality to modern hits with nods to legends like Lulu, alongside more modern artists like Plan B’s early works.

As the song unfolds, it’s driven by big horn sections and irresistibly danceable choruses, effortlessly blending elements of pop and jazz with retro flair and eccentricity, capturing the atmosphere of her roaring live performances. During her recent festival appearances and five-date tour supporting The Lathums, Home has been a set highlight and fan favourite thanks to its feelgood spirit and bouncy rhythms.

As well as the Lathums, Ruby has also shared the stage with Liverpudlian folk-rock legend Jamie Webster, as well as supported the likes of  Becky Hill, Scouting for Girls, The K’s, and Red Rum Club. Three of her tracks are part of Caffe Nero’s playlist, while Home has already secured airtime on BBC Radio Introducing, Radio X and Amazing Radio.

Home is Ruby’s 13th single since 2019, and is expected to form part of her debut EP, set for release later this year – and if the rest of the record is half as good as Home, then Ruby J is stomping on some pretty solid sonic territory.

With a dynamic live presence, a string of upcoming performances, and a debut EP on the horizon, Ruby J’s brand of soulful jazz-infused indie makes her undoubtedly an artist to watch, and Home is the ultimate soundtrack to accompany this exciting chapter in her career.
