Following the success of their track Spooks at the start of the year, Yoodoo Voodoo has released another groove-soaked single to add to our best of 2023 playlist. It Comes Back To You effortlessly merges the bands’ diverse influences, which range from 80s pop and northern soul, to 90s Madchester and disco.
The track opens with a compelling blend of bassy electronics and funk-infused guitar riffs, setting the stage for an infectious groove that persists throughout. Poppy Blond’s soulful vocals take centre stage, bringing feminine flair and what the band describes as a ‘magic touch’. She’s very much their not-so-secret weapon, with a contagious energy and sassy attitude, she delivers each line with enchanting charisma.
Speaking on the lyrics, Yoodoo Voodoo said: “The idea behind the lyrics are centred around the aftermath of an argument and you’re trying to get on with your day but you can’t shake it and it keeps coming back in your head, especially when you believe you’re not at fault.”

And much like that argument, the chorus of It Comes Back To You is one that’s hard to shake, clinging to the grooves in your brain and wiggling its way in until you find yourself joining in to the addictive vocal riffs.
Written by Mark “Bocko” Bossons (lead guitar and vocals) and David Mckechnie (bass), Yoodoo Voodoo has developed a knack for crafting songs around hard hitting, relatable and current themes, such as Echo Chambers and Two Left Feet. And while It Comes Back To You still feels very much moulded of the same stuff, it’s totally timeless and feels like the start of a fresh and more refined direction for the five-piece, perhaps as a result of finally having all the missing pieces fall into place.
Alongside Bocko, Dave and Poppy, Scott Evans on the keys brings with him a raft of production expertise and meticulous attention to detail that transports their sound to new heights, while drummer Jay Hargreaves’s rhythmic precision complements the rumbling basslines and electronic elements, with the band saying ‘he has brought the groove the band have been looking for’.
For me, Yoodoo Voodoo is a shining example of what genuine collaboration and experimentation can produce. Upbeat, danceable and delivered with attitude, It Comes Back To You is uniquely nostalgic and contemporary in equal measure, with contagious melodies and riffs that are impossible to resist.
