I am, by nature, an oversharer. Within 15 minutes of knowing me you’ll be 12 posts deep in my dog’s Instagram account and I’ll be telling you about my collection of quirky pottery and how I can’t sleep without a weighted blanket. I don’t know if it’s the journalist in me, the neurodiversity or the social anxiety – oh would you look at that… I’m doing it now.
I’m certainly not alone in this divulgence of unsolicited information, though, with Stoke-on-Trent electro-pop solo artist Mara Liddle addressing it head on in her sophomore single, Oversharing.
Dubbed ‘Big In 2023’ by a panel of local music experts on BBC Introducing from Stoke, Mara’s music depicts life for a young woman in a world so strongly influenced by the internet, with Oversharing following up her pink-era introduction, Facebook Official.
She explained: “I wrote it just after moving into university accommodation and living with strangers for the first time. It’s about not knowing where the line is when you’re chatting to them, maybe having a couple of drinks and spilling your guts to them unintentionally.”
The 22-year-old’s elecro-pop beats are as addictive as scrolling through Instagram – the original oversharing platform for millennials and gen-zers – the lo-fi bedroom beats paired with beer fear-induced lyrics and anxious thoughts.
It’s a feeling we’ve all experienced – unless you’re someone with a violent amount of self-confidence – but that feeling of having said too much is often rooted in a desire to forge relationships and connections to those around us, with Mara’s playful tracks uniting us in shared social trauma.
Oversharing definitely has that Gen-Z TikTok trending potential like Boy’s A Liar from PinkPantheress, with strong feminine influences like Shygirl and Charli XCX.
Mara’s pink hyperpop aesthetic is really growing into its skin as she continues to share her fun and edgy DIY releases. If MySpace or Bebo were still a thing, it would 100 per cent be my new profile song. I’m ‘gonna play it in my mind for an hour or two’, but you can listen to Oversharing here on Spotify:
