Psyence release tidal wave of a track The Ocean to end 2023

When it comes to Stoke-on-Trent’s ever-changing musical landscape, Psyence is a band that stands as a stalwart, having not only weathered the sonic storms but becoming an integral part of the local landscape for over a decade. With a career spanning 10 plus years, Psyence’s journey has been one of unwavering dedication to their craft, and their latest single, The Ocean, feels like a significant chapter in their story.

Opening with washy 80s synths, Ben Nixon describes the latest record as ‘a ballad of the times’. A departure from their signature fierce alt-rock style, yet retaining the unmistakable Psyence touch, The Ocean presents a more contemplative side to the band.

As the track slowly eases you into the storm, it’s evident that the Midlands five-piece has poured a lot of themselves into this record as emotions ride the waves of punchy drum beats and dreamy vocals. “When the morning comes, be alright, be just fine,” the lyrics capture a character in despair, but there remains a sense of determination – a determination that has often characterised the band and their hardworking nature.

It comes as Psyence say they’ve had one of the ‘toughest years we have faced as a band due to experiences on a personal level’, and there’s a real emotional weight and vulnerability embedded in the song mirroring that.

The record swells to a tidal wave of a chorus, one of the band’s strongest to date, resulting in an indie/rock pop anthem that echoes artists like Tame Impala, Jaws and War on Drugs. The melodic instrumental arrangement is beautifully produced, with winding currents of intertwining guitar licks and bobbing basslines that offer something new to discover on every listen.

The Ocean encapsulates a decade of growth, experimentation, and resilience for Psyence. Immersive and atmospheric with a dreamlike ambiance contrasted by a fast-paced and danceable chorus, this powerful standalone single has again proven that the band can grasp any genre and make it their own.

As Psyence continues to pen their story, The Ocean feels like a pivotal moment in their career, and one they should be incredibly proud of. Reflective of the past, and anticipatory of the future, this introspective record serves as a reminder of Psyence’s legendary status within the scene and beyond and the perfect way to mark the end of 2023.
