Sassy garage punk outfit Gas Kunst, from Northwich, have wasted no time in making a name for themselves in the local music scene. It’s been almost exactly a year since they released their debut single 101, and have since released not one, but two EPs – the latter of which, entitled Gas Mark 2, came out just last month.
Striking while the iron is hot, the punk provocateurs are releasing a dual-single Cinematic Ocean View/Gift Wrap – their first with Rare Vitamin Records.
The A-side, Cinematic Ocean View, kicks off with a coastal feel and bobbing surf rock guitar. Recorded above St. Bride Church in Liverpool, the track harnesses the energy of the city’s rich musical heritage, resulting in a heady mix of punk attitude, distorted guitars, and a relentless rhythm section that feels reminiscent of 70/80s punk icons like if Iggy Pop, Bangles and Pixies took a trip to Blackpool. It’s fun, upbeat and frenetic, a bit nostalgic and the production from Stephen Cole really brings out the raw, unbridled power of Gas Kunst’s sound.
Gift Wrap takes the intensity up a notch, with Gas Kunst unleashing a ferocity that is both exhilarating and slightly menacing, described by the bands as ‘like a kinky version of early Foo Fighters, when they were goodish’. It’s a visceral experience boasting pounding drums, screeching guitars, and snarling vocals that deliver a musical punch to the gut that leaves you craving more, but short and sweet is what Gas Kunst are quickly specialising in. With mixing expertise from James Aparicio, known for his work with legendary acts like Spiritualized and Depeche Mode, the track becomes a sonic powerhouse.
Gas Kunst stand out for both the ferocity of their sound and the meticulous craftsmanship behind it, and their latest releases in Cinematic Ocean View and Gift Wrap are ready to inject new life into the punk scene with unrelenting spirit, tireless energy and a hint of gritty nostalgia.
This dynamic double A-side is set to hit the shelves on October 6, 2023, and will be available on limited edition 7-inch lathe cut clear vinyl as well as on CD. Give it a listen here:
