Stoke-on-Trent electronic trip hop maestro and multi-instrumentalist Scott Evans has once again proven his versatility with a brand new single released under his SAY alias. Radiant is the final precursor to his forthcoming album “By Design, But Still…,”, comprising collaborative tracks starring local musicians ranging from hyperpop Mara Liddle, to rapper LFE.
This time, he’s teamed up with singer-songwriter Cocoh, who has lent her ethereal indie folk-pop vocals to the mesmerising record, which was released March 15.
With Radiant, SAY delves deeper into his signature blend of downtempo allure, drawing parallels to the likes of Zero 7 and Massive Attack. Cocoh’s vocals add a layer of celestial charm, echoing the likes of Kate Bush, with shimmering melodies beautifully complementing Scott’s pulsating beats.
The partnership between SAY and Cocoh for this track is undeniably wonderful. Their camaraderie really shines through in the finished piece. Radiant by name, radiant by nature, there’s something of a golden glow about this track, a warm and positive aura that radiates from the speakers as it progresses.
Throughout the song, SAY showcases his mastery of production, weaving together intricate textures from the laidback verses to the upbeat and optimistic chorus. The emphasis on production that has been the notable trade mark of SAY releases, each element meticulously crafted and precisely balanced, resulting in a really well rounded record and an addictive listen.
Speaking on the process of how these collaborative efforts come to life, Scott told The Leopheard: “For collaborations, after the track is complete, I then have a think who would be able to add something to the song that I can’t. With singers, I always let them write their own lyrics so they can put the emotion behind the vocal. Cocoh did an amazing job on this track – the chorus still gets me every time.”
With Radiant, SAY once again demonstrates his artistry and vision with his innate ability to craft atmospheric soundscapes that almost hypnotise the listener. Cocoh’s contribution to the record is nothing short of stunning, and I’d love to see this duo work together more in the future.
The forthcoming collaborative album, By Design, But Still…, is set to feature local artists such as Mara Liddle, Danni, LFE, Podgy Hodgy and, of course, Cocoh, and is due for release April 19. Until then, have a listen to Radiant here:
