Catchy melodies, intricate guitar riffs and existential lyrics are the trademark sound of Stoke-on-Trent’s new indie band, Silver State, who have been grafting the local grassroots scene establishing a name for themselves as they reel out a glut of singles to hit the ground running in 2023.
Formed in 2022, the five-piece dipped their toes into the water with their debut ‘Clock Test’, gaining positive attention from fans and critics alike, securing themselves a string of support slots and shows across the county.
Recorded at Lower Lane Studios with talented music producer Sam Bloor and assistant Jonny Price to mentor, Silver State released their sophomore single, My Mistake, on Friday, February 10 – and you’ll be hitting ‘add to playlist’ immediately.
The lyrics to My Mistake were written by lead singer Georgia-Mai Dunn, who bravely and earnestly documents her own terrifying experience of being spiked by a stranger on a night out.
“He walks my way and he said ‘I’ll buy you a drink if that’s okay?’ and that was my big mistake” – the first pre-chorus sent chills up and down my arms and Georgia-Mai’s voice seemed to fade in and out, like coming in and out of consciousness.
Her vocals have got a really strong range and there’s a confidence about this track that feels like she’s reclaiming her identity with a fire in her belly. Women’s safety on nights out has been spotlighted in the media in recent months, and it’s brilliant to see a young female musician raising awareness of spiking in such an accessible and artistic way.
My Mistake offers a more dancey tempo than their initial release, curated by Honorata (Hon) Paciorek’s upbeat drums with Ashleigh Moore and Jacob (JJ) Jones on guitar duties.
The bridge is a real highlight of this single, reminiscent of standing outside of a club or in the smoking area, with Harry Wemyss’ bass muffled and more spacey and ambient guitar parts that replicates that feeling of being far too drunk on not quite feeling like you’re in your own head.
My Mistake expertly blends elements of indie, pop, and blues, particularly noted in the Eric Clapton inspired solo from JJ towards the back end of the track.
The juxtaposition between the buoyant melody and darker subject matter make for a conscious-splitting listening experience, but it’s one you’ll still want to have on repeat regardless. In creating this track, Georgia-Mai has exposed her vulnerability in such a stunning way, and for that, she should be extremely proud.
Commenting on the release, producer Sam Bloor said: “I really enjoyed working on the two new Silver State tracks. They are a really talented young band with loads of potential so I’m super excited to see what they do over the new few years!”
Silver State open the This Feeling gig supporting The Facades at The Underground on Friday, February 17. You can buy your tickets for the show here for just £9, where you will be able to be one of the very first to hear some of their yet-to-be-released singles like Figure out and Kraken.
